Mustangs too much for Eagles in Central Keystones Midget Super Bowl

LEWISTOWN –In the night cap of the Central Keystone Football and Cheer League action, there was scoring aplenty as the Midd-West Mustangs put their undefeated record on the line against the gutsy McVeytown Eagles team that came into the game with a 6-4 record.

The Mustangs broke out to an early lead and never looked back as most of the Eagles’ scoring came after the game was almost decided, 42-25.

Midd-West made it presence known right away, scoring on its third play from scrimmage.

With first down and goal from the two, the Mustangs gave the ball to Oakley Bennett and he musled in for the touchdown. With the PAT, Midd-West held the 7-0 advantage with 8:58 still left on the first quarter.

McVeytown rallied back and started to roll down the field, getting to the Mustangs 43.

But the Midd-West defense stood tall, pushing the Eagles backwards forcing them to punt the ball away.

Two plays later, the Mustangs increased its led to 13-0 thanks to a Hunter Wolffley 43-yard sprint.

“It’s a great team that we have here. The boys did an awesome job,” said Midd-West coach Scott Friel. “We have a great group of guys. The running backs are awesome, the line was blocking, we had a great defense as well. I couldn’t be more proud of them. They came out to play football tonight.”

On the Eagles’ third possession, the Mustangs were primed and ready for McVeytown to go to the air, intercepting the ball.

Picking the ball off for the Mustangs was Aaron McNeir, putting his team on their own 40.

Six plays later, the Mustangs extended their lead to 19-0 when quarterback Marc Piccioni found a wide open Tim Hackenberg over the middle for a 37-yard touchdown reception.

With 1:08 still left in the opening quarter, Midd-West was in control.

McVeytown finally got on the board in the second quarter on the legs of Matthew Harshbarger. Harshbarger, who rushed for over 130-yards, helped his team go on a long 13-play drive culminating with a 14-yard run by Cameron Harshbarger, cutting the lead to 19-6.

“I am very proud of our kids. We never quit. A couple bad plays here or there we could have been in the game,” McVeytown coach Mike Rishel said. “A couple of let downs they seemed to give up but then they got their fire back and wanted to start playing.”

Midd-West ended the first half scoring with its second TD pass reception of the game. Piccioni and Hackenberg hooked up for the second time, upping the lead to 25-6 at the half.

Running the ball between the 20’s was not a problem for the Eagles but on its first possession of the second half, McVeytown could only get to the 45 before giving the ball up on downs.

As the quick start offense still sizzling since the opening quarter, Midd-West found the end zone once again.

On its third play of the half, Piccioni called his own number and scampered in from 53-yards out, making it 32-6.

With nothing but pride on the line, McVeytown bounced back and scored on another Cameron Harshbarger run, cutting it to 32-12.

But like most of the evening, the Mustangs had an answer for everything the Eagles threw at them.

A 45-yard touchdown run by Wolffley, upped the Midd-West lead to 38-12.

Despite the deficit, McVeytown kept fighting back.

The Eagles cut the lead to 20 points when Matthew Harshbarger picked up his first touchdown of the game, making it 38-18.

Both team’s added touchdowns in the final two minutes and the celebration began for Midd-West.
