STATE COLLEGE- They battled to the very end.
Despite falling behind 8-0 against a very tough State College team, the Mifflin County 9-10 year olds showed a “never say die attitude”, rallying back to a 12-5 score before finally succumbing to the undefeated champs.
With the 12-5 victory, State College clinched a District 5 title and moves onto the regional round.
Offensively, Mifflin County roped eight hits while State College only had only three.
State College opened the contest posted two runs, taking an early lead.
Kylee Ehrensberger opened with a walk and moved her way around the bases on teammate Peyton Strayer’s at bat, stealing home to give them the early advantage.
Strayer was hit by a pitch and followed Ehrenberger’s example and stole three bases, upping the lead to 2-0.
Mifflin County settled in and kept the damage to a minimum in the first.
State College hurler Ella Corson, who struck out 13 batters in the contest, put the Mifflin County bats in order via a strike out.
In the second inning, State College extended its lead to 8-0 as its patience at plate provided eight walks to go along with as many runs.
The guests had just one hit in the inning and that came on an RBI infield hit by Corson.
After falling behind Mifflin County picked its first run of the contest, sparking its offense.
Rylee Boyer, who had two hits on the night, got the bottom of the second started blasting a double into right field.
Hailee Sheetz picked up her team’s first RBI when she singled in Boyer.
Mackenzie Burdge’s bunt single ended the hits for MC but it would be the start of a new ball game for “Purple and White”.
“Things just didn’t go our way tonight. I couldn’t complain about any of these girls. I am so proud of them. They had a great season. They all came to play tonight, Mifflin County manager Steve Wolfgang said. “We came up a little too short tonight in our comeback but better luck next year. We will be back next year.”
State added a lone run in the third, upping the lead back to eight.
The score would remain 9-1 until the bottom of the fourth.
It would be a lead off walk by Margo Reeder that would give Mifflin County another run.
Reeder stole second and moved over the third thanks to a single by Madyson Rowe.
Madison Pennebaker smacked an RBI single to bring home Reeder, making it 9-2.
However, State College didn’t come into the game undefeated for nothing, adding two more runs in the top of the fifth to almost take a 10-run advantage.
But Mifflin County refused to go away.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mifflin County gave it another shot at cutting into the lead.
When the dust settled, Mifflin county had cut the lead to 11-5.
With one out, Maddy Wolfgang singled into right field.
Reeder put runners on first and second with a second walk of the game for her.
Meanwhile Wolfgang managed to steal her way around the base paths and home, making it 9-3.
Reeder stole second and teammate Morgan Wolfgang also walked.
Both scored on a 2RBI single by Rowe, closing it to 11-5.
Unfortunately for the Purple and White, that would be as close as Mifflin County would get as State College added another run in the top of the sixth.
SC’s defense held tight and picked up the 12-5 victory.
However, Mifflin County finished as District 5 runner up, finishing with a record of 2-2.
