Tough night for MC boys

LEWISTOWN – Wednesday night was not a good night for the Mifflin County boys basketball as they ran into a buzz saw of a Chambersburg team that had things going strong on both offense and defense.
The game was out of reach early as the Trojan led 37-14 at the half and never looked back as they went onto an 82-32 victory.
Mason Snyder led the Huskies with eight points while Ryan Walker and Gabe Jones followed up with a 7-point and a 6-point effort, respectively.
Cole Christian led all scorers as he finished with 20 points for Chambersburg.
Teammate Joel Torres chipped in with 16 while Cade Whitfield rounded out the double-digit scorers with a 12-point night.
“What day do very very well is they really play defense. They come out and play hard it is so hard to get a shot on them. They really fly to the ball. One example is when Westover drove the ball down court and they had already set up to take to charge or have him dribble around them,” said Mifflin County coach David Sheetz. “They just fly to the ball and they played very very well.”
In the first quarter, the two battled early despite Chambersburg jumping out to score the first seven points.
Christian made quick work of the clock as he opened the game with a jumper and seconds later a triple to give the Trojans a 5-0 advantage.
After an early Huskie turnover, Chambersburg’s Cade Whitfield ran a lay up in, upping it to a 7-0 advantage with 5:93 left in the opening quarter.
Mifflin County got in the scoreboard thanks to a Gabe Jones tough shot in traffic.
Chambersburg went back up by seven on its next possession when Jacob Brouse broke free for the lay-in.
Snyder got the Huskies back on the board when he was free underneath and put in the jumper, cutting it again to five 9-4.
But the Trojans seem to have an answer for everything Mifflin County could throw at them.
Christian built the lead back up as he went a perfect 2-for-2 from the charity stripe.
Jones tried to widdle the lead back down but could only hit 1-of-2 from the foul line, making it 11-5 with 2:27 left in the quarter.
Christian was at it again minutes later scoring another two points and adding to the Chambersburg lead, 13-5.
The Trojans would get 13 first quarter points as his team would outscore Mifflin County 4-2 the rest of the period, taking the 17-7 advantage going into the second.
Things started to heat up for Chambersburg in the second period when they outscored Mifflin County 20-7 to take an overwhelming 23-point lead into the intermission.
Things didn’t get much better for “the Purple and Black attack” as the found themselves once again getting outscored 20-7 going into the final stanza.
Both teams stepped up their scoring in the fourth as Mifflin County hit the 11-point mark in the period.
However, it was too little too late for Mifflin County as Chambersburg still sizzled from the floor with 25 points in the final stanza as the Trojans went onto the 50-point victory.
Mifflin County will end its season Saturday as it hosts Altoona.
