Bellefonte pounds Somerset en route to title

They came to play!
The Bellefonte softball team wasted little time in taking care of Somerset in their District 6 championship game, winning 10-0 in five innings Wednesday night at Beard Field at Penn State University.
The Lady Raiders were on fire from the batters box pounding out 14 hits while holding Somerset to just four hits.
Ace Tara Baney had her A-game going on the mound, striking out three and was a big part of three double plays, ending early threats by the Eagles.
Baney had it going at the plate as well posting two hits, a single and a double while scoring a run.
Emma Dehaas sizzled going 3-for-3 with a double, RBI and a run.
In the first, Alexis Wetzler also finished with two hits on the night, banging out a triple and an RBI single that would close things out and let the celebration begin.
Taylor Kerr rounded out the multi hitters with a 2-for-2 night, highlighted with a triple.
After forcing a double play to end a threat in the top of the first, the Bellefonte bats went right to work.
Baney led off with a single and was moved over to second on a Wetzler sacrifice.
Rianna Trexler roped an RBI single to score Baney.
Trexler’ stay on base was not a long one as Dehaas doubled in Wetzler to give the Lady Raiders a 2-0 advantage going into the second.
The big inning would come for Bellefonte in the third inning as it rallied for seven runs in the inning to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
Eleven players batted in the inning for the Lady Raiders.
With one out, Wetzler sent one into the centerfield gap as she motored around to third with a triple.
Trexler singled in Wetzler to start the rally.
When the dust settled in the inning, the Raiders found themselves one run away from ending the game, leading 9-0.
Highlighting things was Mallorie Smith who hustled out a gapper for the inside-the-park home run.
Baney got stronger as the game progressed and would keep the Somerset offense at bay.
Finally in the bottom of the fifth, Bellefonte finished the game out when Wetzler singled in Smith to end the game.
