State College tops MC in series opener

REEDSVILLE – Patience proved to be a virtue for the State College 11-12 all-star softball team Tuesday night at Reedsville in its contest against Mifflin County.
“The Purple and Black Attack” started out strong, playing six in the first inning but then cooled down the rest of the way as SC came back to score a run in the bottom of the first, six in the second and third and finishing off the game with three in the fourth to end the game as 16-6 victors in the opening game of the series.
Despite the loss, Audrey Jordan struck out seven in the contest.
Picking up the win on the evening was Zia Bodner who went the distance.
For State College Meredith Meengs picked up four RBIs on night while teammate Ava Bierly went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored.
Ava Babcock went 2-for-3 with 2RBI.
Offensively for Mifflin County, Jordan had the biggest highlight smacking an inside-the-park home run en route to the 1-for-2 try.
In the first,Aja Binder led things off with a walk and teammate Dakota Hershberger raced out an infield single.
Bailey McNitt loaded the bases reaching on an error setting the stage for Jordan.
Jordan found a hole in the outfield and was able to score herself and her teammates, making it 4-0.
Maddie Pennebaker and Katelyn Lefevre later scored to give the local fans a lot to cheer for.
Bierly was the lone batter to cross home in their part of the first as she singled and reached third on an error, later to score.
Having a 6-1 advantage, Mifflin County hit the ball hard but most of the time right to a State College fielder.
In the bottom of the second, State College would battle back and take the lead for the first time at 7-6.
Like in the second, Mifflin County could not change the momentum shift and went down scoreless for the second inning in a row.
The bats were back at it in the third as State College had Bierly, Payton Strayer, Ella Corson, Bodner, Meengs and Grace Lippencott all reach home, increasing the lead to 13-6.
State College ended things in the bottom of the fourth to take round one, 16-6.
