BELLEVILLE – write it up in the books.
Its a wrap.
With a rare day off Sunday, the Mifflin County Babe Ruth 15-year olds were back at it on an early morning contest against an opportunistic Broomall Newtown team that was looking to upset the boys in “Blue and White”.
Despite a couple of miscues Mifflin County stood tall when it needed to as it held onto to a nail biting 4-3 eight inning contest.
After sending the game into extra stanza, Mifflin County held the visitors scoreless in the top of the inning, giving themselves a chance to end the game and break the 3-3 tie.
It took just a few batters for the game to take its final turn.
Hudson First got the inning started with a bunt single that got the momentum back in Mifflin County’s favor.
With one crack of the bat, lead-off hitter Blaine Dickson roped a single into centerfield that took an awkward bounce, allowing First to become the “last” run.
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Broomall tied the game with the help of some uncharacteristic Mifflin County miscues.
Ben Davis singled into centerfield and then scored on a error on Thomas Kane’s at bat, cutting it to 3-1.
Pinch runner Andrew Danowitz came into run for Kane. That proved to be beneficial as he scored on an error on Will Kelley’s at-bats, inching closer at 3-2.
A single by Eric Molinaro knotted the game at three before the Mifflin County defense went into shut down mode and stopped the comeback attempt.
Mifflin County opened the game playing the first run of the game.
Dickson doubled to start things off later scored on a fielders choice RBI by Evan Smith.
The home team was at it again in the second inning, picking up another run.
Camden Shawver opened with a walk and then moved up a base as teammate Seth Benson walk. Teammate Shane Dippery also walked to old the bases.
Shawver scored on a RBI fielders choice by Cade Shoemaker.
Evan Smith led another Mifflin County scoring inning in the fourth, doubling to center and later scoring on an RBI fielders choice by Shawver.
Mifflin County rose to the challenge when it had to, something it might be able to use before the state competition is over.
