WILLIAMSPORT, PA – Ricardo Bautista’s three-run homer in the first inning opened the floodgates as the State College Spikes used a 15-hit attack, and a nine-strikeout mound effort from Daniel Castano, to top the Williamsport Crosscutters, 9-3, in the opener of a doubleheader on Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.

Bautista’s shot, his third of the season, went over the right-field wall off Williamsport (14-11) starter Julian Garcia (2-2). The Spikes chased Garcia, who entered the game third in the New York-Penn League in ERA, off the mound after two innings after opening up a 5-0 lead.

Scott Hurst finished a home run shy of the cycle for the Spikes (16-11), while Bryce Denton added three hits of his own to the State College surge.

Castano (6-0) held it down on the mound with 5 2/3 innings of work to become the first NYPL pitcher to six wins. The southpaw allowed three runs on eight hits, but did not walk a batter. Castano has now recorded 43 strikeouts to just four walks over 40 innings of work this season.

Garcia yielded three earned runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two batters in taking the loss.

Greg Pickett went 3-for-3 to lead the Crosscutters’ offense, which produced ten hits as a team.
