In battle for Mtn League, BEA tops PO in volleyball

WINGATE – When you’re hot, you’re hot!
After going toe-to-toe at the frontline with Philipsburg-Osceola, the Bald Eagle Area volleyball team caught fire in the second game and extended it into the third and final game, scoring 20 uncontested points combined to take home the 3-0 victory.
Bald Eagle won 25-22, 25-13 and 25-16 sending the rowdy supportive student section and the rest of the Eagles’ fan happy.
Playing a sizzling front line play was Bald Eagles’ Middle Mae Hugar and setter Madison Rockey.
It’s the game that both teams circle on their calendar from day one.
For a while it looked as if the match was going to be another nail biting affair that would keep everyone on the edge of their seats.
Things looked like things were going in that direction as the two took to the court in the opening game of the match.
In the first game, both teams battled until the very end.
In the first game, Bald Eagle got on the scoreboard first picking up a side out and a service point by Hannah Zimmerman. Rockey helped secure point number two with a spike.
After the two exchanged side outs, Philipsburg got its first service point of the game from the arm of Morgan Thompson.
With the points, the Mounties tied the contest at three.
The two again exchanged service points and PO got the ball back.
With the ball back in their hands, the Mounties picked up two consecutive service points by Mollie Maguire to take the lead for the first time 6-4.
Before the Eagles knew what happened, Rachel Simpson put Philipsburg up 9-5.
Back came the Eagles as the home team went on a 3-0 run thanks to two service points by Elita Brown closing it to a 9-8 advantage for PO.
But the Mounties extended its lead thanks to a Jadyn Eckburg service point.
After numerous side out opportunities by both teams, Bald Eagle Area was able to knot the game up at 13.
With the ball and the crowd behind her, Bald Eagle server Rockey rolled off six consecutive service points to seemingly put the game away at 19-13 but someone forgot to tell the Mounties.
Despite the deficit, PO was able to keep it close before the Eagles’ were able to put the game away, winning 25-23.
Things started out close in the second game as the two went deep into the contest with Bald Eagle holding a nail biting 16-13 advantage before things started to sizzle for the Eagles.
Grace Hugar stood back at the service line and finished off the game for Bald Eagle, dropping nine consecutive points, putting the game away 25-13.
Finally in the third game, Bald Eagle remained hot from the service line.
This time it would be Zimmerman that would put her team out in front and basically put the contest away, 10-0.
Respectfully, the Mounties refused to go away without a fight but it was too little too late as the Eagles took the game and the match, 25-16.
