LOCK HAVEN – Closing it down in style.
Central Mountain was well represented in the final medal rounds of the evening Saturday at the King of the Mountain Wrestling Tournament.
Closing in on wrapping up a third place finish, the Wildcats sent their 285-pounder, Jacob Edwards into the finals against Exters’ Ryan Crane.
In a nail biting three period battle, Edwards cane out on top, 3-1, securing the third place finish for Central Mountain.
The Wildcats had six wrestlers in to wrestle for a medal, led by heavyweight Edwards who went for the top spot in the heavyweight division.
Also wrestling for a medal were Tanner Weaver (170), Malik Houtz (220), Johnathan Schreffler (113) and Seth Andrus (132).
“Overall the kids came out and fought hard. Whether they win or lose we are proud of them. Some of the guys fared a little bit better than the others. For our younger guys it’s a learning experience for them,” Central Mountain coach Biff Walizer said. “We are pretty pleased. We came in the top three of the field that we have here. It’s a pretty good accomplishment.”
Andrus also picked up a victory in his final match, clinching a third place bid with a win over Colin Leonard of Northern Lebanon 4-1.
Schreffler won his match up in the 7th place contest, winning by a pin fall at 5:43 over Seneca Valley’s Dylan Chappell.
Bald Eagle Area did well also as three got into the mix.
When the buzzer sounded on the last match, the Bald Eagles finished in the top 10, sitting at a ninth place finish.
They were led by 138-pound Seth Koleno. Koleno went up against Phillipsburg, New Jersey’s Cody Harrison. Koleno broke open an early first period tie to take the King of the Mountain title, 8-5.
Bellefonte managed to get one wrestler in at 195. Finishing eighth for the Red Raiders was Max Mondy.
“It was a tough weight class and he (Mondy) fought through it. He wrestled some real close matches,” Bellefonte coach Mike Maney said. “Anytime you can place here it’s a great accomplishment. There are different State place winners and such in this division. So it’s pretty deep and has great competition to see where you are at early in the year and to bounce back and place is quite an accomplishment.”
Going into the semi-finals of day two of the King of the Mountain wrestling tournament, the Central Mountain Wildcats were within striking distance of first place of the top team in the two-day wrestle fest.
After a hard working morning, the Bald Eagle mat men moved up to 11th while the young Bellefonte squad dropped to 27th on the day.
As the day wore on, the competition grew tougher as the Wildcats and Bald Eagle Area wrestlers lined the final matches of the day.
For Bald Eagle, the Eagles sent Koleno, Gage McClenahan (152), Garrett Rigg (145) and Garrett Giedroc (113).
Giedroc went up against Braden Ricchini from Council Rock South. Ricchini took the bout by pin fall, giving Geidroc a sixth place finish.
McClenahan wrestled tough in his match against Dan Mancini of Own J Roberts. Any early takedown of McClenahan in the first period proved too much to over come as he fell 3-0.
However, McClenahan finished in fourth.
Rigg also wrestled tough at 145 in his match against Northern York’s Paul Feite. Unfortunately for Rigg, a late take down in the third period, ended a 2-2 tie and helped Feite to the 5-2 victory leaving Rigg with a fourth place finish as well.
