Huntingdon’s up-tempo offense too much for BEA

By Kenny Varner
WINGATE – Coming into their game Tuesday, the Bald Eagle Area boys basketball team was looking to make a statement with First seed Huntingdon coming to town.
The game was like a back and forth track meet as a total of almost 150 points were scored in it.
Unfortunately, the Bearcats would break out to a fast start and continue their lead until the final buzzer, winning 83-66.
Huntingdon finished the game with four players in double digits.
The Bearcats were led by the inside/outside play of Nick Gearhart who finished with a game-high 19 points. Gearhart cranked out three triples in the contest.
Teammate Nick Rigby was next as he posted 17points.
Also posting double figures for the Bearcats were Jonathan Price and Jackson Ritchey who finished with a 16-and 10-point effort, respectively.
Bald Eagle also had three of its players end the contest as double figure scorers.
Leading the way for the home team was Drew Bucha’s 15-point effort.
Jaden and Jordan Jones combined with 13 points and 10 points, respectively.
“We were sluggish in the first half. We were talking about second opportunities. They missed a lot of shots tonight that they don’t usually miss and we were letting the ball hit the floor and they were out hustling us to the ball,” Bald Eagle coach Bill Butterworth said. “They were getting second and third chances at the basket. You can’t give a team like Huntingdon more than two shots at a time.”
In the first half, the Bearcats jumped out to the lead early.
Jaden Jones hit the opening shot of the game, putting the Eagles up by two.
But the Bearcats came right back and quickly tied it up as Owen Lane hit a runner in the lane.
Jonathan Price picked off an Eagles’ pass and went right in for the lay up.
Bucha hit his first bucket, tying the game back at four with 6:39 left.
From there, the Bearcats went on a 8-2 run, putting them up 12-6.
The run caused Butterworth to call a time out.
Bucha cut the lead to 12-8 when he hit 2-of-2 from the charity stripe.
But the High-tempo play of Huntingdon helped put them in another scoring run. This time it was a 9-2 scoring tilt, putting them up 21-10.
When the first quarter ended, Huntingdon held a 26-14 lead.
In the second quarter, the Eagles cut down on the Bearcats scoring but it wasn’t enough to cut into the lead as their offense only mustered 14.
At the intermission, the Bearcats held a commanding 42-28.
The Bearcats continued its run and gun high tempo offense in the third as it outscored the Eagles 22-14, giving them a 64-42 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Bald Eagle never gave up and continued to fire away in the fourth, outscoring Huntingdon 24-18.
Even at the end, Mikey Habovick gave the Home crowd something to cheer about, hitting a triple with 19.4 left.
But it wasn’t enough as the Bearcats went home the winner of a 83-66 contest.
