Central Mountain bats too much for Huskies

By Kenny Varner
LEWISTOWN – Central Mountain opened quickly offensively and took care of everything that was hit to them as it defeated Mifflin County Monday night on the road, 6-2.
Sparking things at the plate for Central Mountain was Asher Corl who finished with a 2-for-4 afternoon sporting a 2-run home run and a double.
The Wildcats were also able to get multiple hits from Zac Eck 2-for-4, 2 runs and Mahlik Houtz 2-for-4.
Picking up the win from the mound was Aaron Swartz while Mifflin County’s Isaac Matthews took the loss.
The combination of Swartz and Zane Probst kept the Huskies at bay, despite Mifflin County having hit the ball game hard throughout, allowed only three hits in the contest.
Tyreen Smalley, Kanagy and Noah Wright were the Mifflin County hitters.
“First pitch of the game Zac Eck singles, Asher Corl doubles, and Aaron Swartz singles in Swartz so we jump out ahead. That’s awesome and then Aaron comes out and puts a zero up to start. He pitched solid,” said Central Mountain coach Michael Kramer. “We we’re extend the lead later in the game and got some hits back to back which important. We got into a little bit of trouble later on at the point we decided to make a pitching change Zane cane in and got out of the bases loaded with two outs.”
In the first inning, Eck smashed a single into right field.
He moved up to third on a double by Corl, setting the stage for Swartz. Swartz helped his own cause as he singled into right field, scoring Eck, making it 1-0.
Mifflin County settled in and set the Wildcats down after just one run.
In the bottom of the inning, Max Oburn reached first on a Central Mountain miscue.
But that would be the last runner of the inning as the Huskies went scoreless.
Mifflin County held Central Mountain in the second and third inning.
However, the Wildcats were at it again in the fourth, plating another run to go up, 2-0.
Trevor Hanna took a Aaron Kanagy
offering into deep to the corner of right field for a double.
Troy Gardner picked up an RBI single as he sent a blooper toward the right field line that fell in between the second baseman and right fielder.
Mifflin County cut into the lead in the bottom of the inning.
Bryce Yetter opened with a walk as did teammate Isaac Mathews.
Yetter was forced out on a grounder by Kanagy.
But patience at the plate paid off as Noah Wright singled pinch runner Evan Smith, making it 2-1.
Evan Mock and Tyreen Smalley put the pressure on Swartz, loading the bases.
Kramer came out to the mound and gave the ball to Zane Probst to put out the fire in relief.
And put out the fire he did, not allowing another run in the inning while the potential tying and go ahead runs were on the base paths.
With one swing of the bat in the fifth, the Huskies comeback attempt was severely hampered.
Eck led off the inning with a double deep into right centerfield.
Corl took his pitch and sent a liner deep over the left centerfield fence, putting the Wildcats ahead 4-1.
Central Mountain added another run in the inning, taking a 5-1 advantage going into the bottom of the inning.
Mifflin County picked up its second run in the bottom of the sixth.
Mathews led off with a walk and later scored on an RBI sacrifice by Noah Wright.
But it was not to be for Mifflin County as the Wildcat would add another in the seventh and hold on for the 6-2 victory.
“I think we only had four strike outs the entire game and Swartz is a strike out pitcher so I was pleased that we hit the ball. It seemed like everything we hit and even balls that were hit really hard went right at someone, they (Central Mountain) played very well,” Mifflin County coach Bernie Howard said. “It’s tough to score runs when you can’t ding one in there once in a while.”
