Central tops Bald Eagle in D6 action

MILESBURG – Sometimes in Sports it just isn’t your night.
Despite hitting the ball well offensively, the Bald Eagle Area Softball team could only muster four hits while their opponent Central seemed to find the holes it needed to scatter 14 hits as it took its the second round District 6 playoff 10-1 over the Eagles.
A 7-run 3rd inning sparked the Dragons, as they held the Eagles to a lone run en route to the victory.
However, the Eagles played hard to the very end and their coach was happy with the season that the team had had.
“It was one of those games where they were where they needed to be and we were almost. We had a lot of tough catches that didn’t stay in our glove. But I’m not going to reflect on that,” Bald Eagle coach Don Lucas said. “I’m proud of these guys. Sixteen and four was a great year. A lot of these teams would love to be 16-4. We just wasn’t the better team tonight and they were and they showed it and they deserved to win it.”
Central hurler Dylan Claycomb picked up the win while freshman sensation Madison Peters took the loss.
Multiple hitters for the Dragons were Olivia Smith (3-for-4 2runs), Grace Baker (2-for-4 run), Ashley Negley (3-For-4 RBI), Cam Feathers (4-for-4 run, RBI), and Claycomb (2-for-3 run).
Highlighting the offense for Central was Feathers as she blasted a round tripper late in the contest.
In the second inning, Central took the lead for the first time.
Negley led off the inning with a single while teammate Feathers also single, moving runners to First and third.
With Cassi Mock’s sacrifice fly, Negley made her way home before the tag at the plate.
Holding the 1-0 advantage, the Dragons exploded for seven runs in the third while posting six hits.
Olivia Smith led off with a single into shallow left.
Grace Baker hit a perfect bunt that bounced between pitcher and catcher, putting two on.
Jenna Ritchey singled in Smith while advancing Baker to second.
Negley followed with an RBI single of her own, plating Baker.
Feathers kept thing going when hitting another blooper into shallow left.
Claycomb hustled out an Eagles miscue which allowed Ritchey to score, upping it to 5-0.
Mock scored Claycomb and Negley on a single. Mock later scored the seventh run, putting her team ahead 8-0 early on.
Bald Eagle Area was able to get on the scoreboard in the third.
Megan King started things off with a walk. She moved over to second on a single by Brooke Woodward.
King later scored on a RBI single Mara Hockenberry.
Central added another run in the fifth, extending it to 9-1.
But in the sixth, Feathers blasted a shot that easily cleared the fence, making the final score at 10-1.
That would be how the game finished.
But the Eagles hustled hard to the very end. The promise of the team will grow in the off season.
“We’re not done. We have a lot of great kids coming back. We’re going to lose four good leaders that were seniors,” Lucas said. “It’s sad to lose four of our gals that have been with us. They were the first senior group that I came up with. It’s sad to see them go. But on a happy note, we have a good group coming back to build on.”
