Bellefonte girls push Hollidaysburg to the brink; falls 2-1 in OT

WINGATE – It was a heartbreaking night for the Bellefonte girls soccer team in their bid for a District 6 title.

In their game against Hollidaysburg the Lady Raiders left everything out on the field only to fall in a 2-1 overtime loss.

Highlighting the night for the Red Raiders was the play of Cati Besch in goal as she was tested early and often and allowed just one regulation goal and was an interval part of keeping the Lady Raiders in the game while trailing for most of the first half.

“Props to Cati Besch she had a phenomenal game in goal for us tonight,” said Bellefonte coach Stacey Miller. “She played her heart out. I think our defense put it all together tonight. They played hard. I’m really disappointed that we couldn’t come out with the win for them.”

Soccer can be a game of inches and it shown tonight early in the first half.

After stopping shot after shot, blitzes in the lane by the Tigers, Hollidaysburg was able to slip one past the Bellefonte goalie.

Rita Kendzoria broke free and went on a breakaway attempt. She sent a screaming liner just out of the reach of a diving Besch, making it 1-0 at 17:30.

From there both defenses took turns fighting off each other as each were looking to take the momentum in the back-third.

But when the intermission came, the game remained 1-0 in favor of the Tigers.

But the Lady Raiders cane out of the half, inspired and seem to have an extra spring in their step.

After pushing the ball down in the Tigers’ end, they finally got their break.

With 30:04 still left in the contest, Mallory Smith tied the game at one on an unassisted goal of her own.

As the two continued to battle, the intensity around the goal areas on both sides got stronger.

But neither team were willing to give up a goal.

The game had to be sent to an 15-minute overtime period to decide it.

With 6:08 left, Alyssa Bell got the game winner, giving the Tigers the District 6 title.

Besch finished the game with 13 saves in the loss.
