By Kenny Varner

STATE COLLEGE – Two legendary wrestling programs went head-to-head Tuesday when Central Mountain traveled to State College to wrestle the Little Lions.

The Wildcats opened up with a 12-0 lead and never looked back as it picked up the hard fought 45-24 victory.

With the win, Central Mountain improves to 9-1 while State College falls to 5-5.

“State College has some talented kids but everybody who went out, reguardless of the outcome, looked like they were battling tonight,” Central Mountain coach Biff Walizer said.

Starting at 145, Lane Porter waited little time in getting the Wildcats on the board, pinning Jason Dry with just 31 ticks left in the first.

In the 152-pound weight class, Central Mountain’s 152 pound Alonzo Henry came back from a 5-1 second period deficit, to reverse his fortunes by picking up Julien Simmons and placing him on his back for the come-from behind pin, 3:59 into the contest, upping the lead to 12-0.

“The kid was pretty slick. Alonzo went in on a couple shots but had trouble finishing and got hit with a very nice duck under,” said Walizer. “ Then they got into that scramble along the edge and Alonzo found himself in a good position to take him down and get the fall.”

Even in defeat, Central Mountain’s 160-pounder Caleb Porter battled Tyler Price, but fell in a 1-0 nail biter, cutting it to only a nine-point advantage.

At 170, the Wildcats bounced right back to pick up another pin, the third in the young night.

Austin Confer pinned State’s Noah Prewitt 1:06 left in the second.

After another loss at 182, Central Mountain’s Tanner Riggle picked up the team’ fourth pin, taking down Nicholas Beebe, with 35 seconds left in the first.

Holding a 24-6 advantage, the Wildcats were a part of history when State College’s Cole Urbas picked up his 100th win. He pinned Nikolas Miller with 1:05 left in the second period.

Heavyweight Jacob Edwards pinned State College’s Harrison Schoen just 37 seconds into the match, upping the Wildcats’ lead to 30-12.

106-pounder Central Mountain’s Derek Keen outworked Bailey Weaverly finishing with a tech fall with only 37 seconds left in the third.

State College picked up a pin at 113, cutting into the lead at 35-18.

At 120 pounds, Central Mountain picked up another fall when Johnny Schreffler pinned Owen Barr, extending the lead to 41-18.

State College took the 126-weight class,

Kayden Busey, Central Mountain’s 132-pounder, dominated his match with Kyle Martin, winning by a major decision, clinching the win for the Wildcats, 45-21.

Despite State winning the 138 pound class, the win was too little too late as the Wildcats went onto the 45-24 victory.

“I like where we are at right now. We still have a ways to go,” said Walizer. “But last weekend, the two bouts we had were important ones for us to get under our belts.”
