Rogers, Lady Raiders hold off Tyrone for win

By Kenny Varner

BELLEFONTE – A major step forward.

After losing to Tyrone earlier in the season, the Bellefonte softball team evened the season series as it used its team speed to its maximum, topping the Eagles 3-1 in front of the home crowd.

In just her fourth game back from injury, Red Raider pitcher Lexi Rogers and a rejuvenated defense allowed just four hits and only one run. She struck out six and failed to walk a Tyrone batter the entire game.

Tyrone’s only run came early on as Sidney Shaw roped a huge blast over the right field fence.

Rogers also stayed ahead of the count for much of the game, rarely getting behind on the batter.

Offensively, the Red Raiders got a 2-for-3 effort by Emily Pugh. She hit a single and a triple.

Tyrone’s Cate Baran took the loss as she also went the distance, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven.

Teammate Lily Gardner used her speed in her last two at bats, hustling out infield hits.

“Tyrone just keeps getting better. Doug (Baran) does a really good job with them. We talked early about anytime you get a chance to beat a team that beat you earlier in the season that says we’re getting better and let’s make a push and keep it going,” Bellefonte coach Travis Foster said. “Emily Pugh has a big hit for us late when we had runners on second leading 2-1. Em hit the ball up the middle to score one. They (Tyrone) hit a double in the final inning which allowed us to be relaxed and that run would’ve hurt anything so that allowed Lexi to just sit back and cruise and get the outs she needed.”

Both pitchers took control early.

Tyrone struck in the top of the second.

With two out, Shaw came up to the plate a sent a Rogers’ offering over the fence in right, making it 1-0.

Rogers settle back in and kept the Eagles’ bats at bay.

In the fourth, the Red Raiders used its speed to manufacture two runs. They were also helped by two Tyrone miscues as well.

Hanna Lauck sent shot of her own that hit off the left centerfield fence, but the Tyrone outfield quickly reacted and got the ball in stopping her at a long single.

She moved up to second when Rogers reached on an error by the shortstop, putting runners on first and second with nobody out.

Sara DeHaas hit a grounder to third and she forced out Lauck but on the throw to first, the ball was wild, allowing Rogers to make it all the way to third.

DeHaas stole second on the next play.

Minutes later, Baran three a wild pitch allowing Rogers to score and DeHaas to move up to third.

Pugh notched her first RBI on the night as she blazed her way to first, teaching onban infield single to give her team the advantage.

The defense took over from there as Rogers was on target and so was the defense.

Bellefonte added to its lead in the sixth as DeHaas led off the inning with a double into left.

Two batters later, Pugh smoked a ball into center and the ball went under the fielders’ glove for the RBI triple.

From there, Bellefonte allowed just a double before shutting down Tyrone the rest of the way and notching their fourth victory of the season.
