Bellefonte evens record at 1-1 with a 47-3 win over Bearcats on grid iron

By Kenny Varner

BELLEFONTE – Reversing their fortunes from a week ago, the Bellefonte football team had its team primed and ready for Huntingdon Friday night in Mountain League action.

After spotting the Bearcats an early field goal, the Red Raiders went on a run  outscoring Huntingdon 47-0 the rest of the way, picking up the 47-3 victory.

Bellefonte running back CJ Funk led the march as he scored three times while finishing with 219 yards rushing and nine in the pass catching department.

Teammate Trae Bauman went for 105 yards receiving in the victory while quarterback Ethan Rossman three for 131 yards on the night.

“We put a tremendous effort out there tonight. Last week helped us out and it put everything in perspective for us,” said Bellefonte coach Shanon Manning. “I pushed this group harder than I’ve pushed any group in the last 5-to-6 years. They really responded.”

Huntingdon got the kick off to start things off and moved the ball down to the Bellefonte 4-yard line before having to settle for a Giovan Scaccia field goal.

But it didn’t take long for the Red Raiders to respond.

On third down and five from the 36, Funk broke free and blazed his way into the end zone for the score. With the successful extra point by Dan Persiko, Bellefonte led 7-3.

On the Bearcats next possession, Bellefonte forced them to punt.

With the ball securely on 16, they once again gave the ball to Funk. He did not disappoint as he scampered for an 86-yard touchdown run, making it 13-3.

From there the route was on.

Still in the first, Rossman ended the scoring as he hit Trae Bauman on a 60-yard TD hook up.

When the buzzer sounded on the first, Bellefonte led 20-3.

In the second quarter, the Red got Red Raiders found the end zone once again when Funk broke loose on yet another touchdown run, this one a 42-yard TD.

Rossman rounded out the first half like he did the first quarter, Horton Bauman for a touchdown, this one was a 45-yard hook up with just nine ticks on the clock, upping the lead to 34-3 at the half.

Bellefonte put the game into the mercy rule scenario as it got runner Mason Grey involved and he also found pay dirt in a 40-yard TD run.

Rounding out the scoring was Nic Capperelle as he scored on a 45-yard touchdown run, ending the scoring at 47-3 and evening the Red Raiders record at 1-1.

Bellefonte travels to Philipsburg-Osceola next week to battle the Mounties.
