Central Mountain Lady soccer team shuts out DuBois

By Kenny Varner

LOCK HAVEN – Opening up with two goals to open their contest against visiting DuBois, the Central Mountain girls’ soccer team picked up a dominating 2-0 Saturday.

“To see the girls come out and play a real dynamic performance for us nice to see. It’s everything we wanted them to do all season,” Central Mountain coach Cole Black said. “We’re starting to turn that corner a little bit and seeing positive things come out of these games.”

Before either team got a chance to settle in, the Wildcats went knocking right at the Beavers goal. Speedy Hunter Barger posted the first shot on goal but it was stopped but after a kick out, the ball got back into the possession of Barger and she followed with a blast past goalie Emily Cherubini, making it 1-0 with 37:34 left in the first.

Barger used her speed to the it most advantage over the Beavers as she connected just minutes later on the second goal of the game with 33:24.

From there, both teams battled at the midfield and the Wildcats managed to limit the Beavers trips down the field.

The Wildcats continued to put the pressure on the DuBois defense and were looking for more.

However, Cherubini wasn’t going to let anymore through.

On the defensive side in the first half, Central Mountain goalie Hailey Swortwood was challenged just once and was able to scoop up the three shots she was subjected to.

The back-third play of the Wildcats were tough all game, acting like a solid wall against numerous shots that could have been sent Swortwood’s way but was blocked by a swarming back-line.

DuBois was fortunate enough to pick up two corner opportunities in the first.

However, both went for nothing as the Beavers were sent away empt handed.

When the teams went into the intermission, the Wildcats led in the contest 2-0, led in shots on goal by a 6-3 margin and trailed 2-1 in corner opportunities.

Central Mountain only got stronger in the second half as it started to wear out the Beavers in transition and frustrate them on defense.

Barger again got loose early and almost added a goal to her team’s scoresheet but her breakaway shot hit the overhead crossbar and out over.

As strong as the Central Mountain defense was in the first, it really clinched its grip on the game in the second.

Most of the half was played in the Beavers’ part of the field.

When the defense was tested, the Lady Wildcat defense protected their goalie and would keep Swortwood untested in the period.

When the buzzer sounded ending the game, Central Mountain did not allow a shot in the entire second half and out shot its opponent 16-3 en route to the 2-0 shut out.
