Central Mountain softball 10-runs Shikellamy

MILL HALL – They saves the best for last.

After battling for five and a half innings against a feisty Shikellamy team, the Central Mountain Wildcats softball team blew open the game, playing eight runs in the bottom of the six to take the game shortened 15-5 win Thursday at Central Mountain high school.

Picking up the win in relief was Alyssa Fisher as she replaced Madi Knepp in the fifth.

Fisher was perfect on the mound as she refused to surrender any hits to the Braves’ offense.

Fisher also saw perfection at the plate as the Wildcats’ lead off hitter went a perfect 3-for-3 on the night along with picking up 2RBIs and 2 runs.

Other multiple hitters on the night for Central Mountain were Morgan Wetzel (2-for-4 2 runs and 2RBI), Jenny Skow (2-for-2 run, RBI), Bailee Renninger (2-for-3 RBI), Autumn Dershem (2-for-4 2RBI, run).

Central Mountain pounded out 15 hits while the Braves picked up nine.

Shikellamy’s offense were led by Kayleigh Lenner (2-for-4 run, RBI), Keirston Long (2-for-2 RBI).

Picking up the loss in the six-inning contest was Katelynn Kremer.

One of the Braves Achilles heel late in the game was four errors in the fifth and sixth innings.

Despite the late inning sizzling bats, Wildcats coach Fred Caldwell thinks his players are coming along but they are not quite where they should be quite yet.

“The outcome was better. It was better to win than lose but was they way we needed to play ball. I thought yesterday was the best practice we’ve had so far this year. I thought our hitting was there. They were more upbeat. I was very optimistic coming into tonight,” said Caldwell. “We’ve done that a couple times this year when we fall behind and then comeback to take the lead. Fortunately, it was enough to win the game. I still don’t think we’re quite there yet. But it’s better. We took a step today.”

After giving up a run in the first, Central Mountain came back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three.

Fisher led off with a double into center.

Caitlyn Watson followed with a walk.

Morgan Wetzler brought both in as she smacked a sizzler into right center, making it 2-1.

Later Wetzler scored on an RBI single by Renninger, making it 3-1.

The Braves tied it in the second, posting two runs in the process.

Central Mountain took back the lead in the third, collecting two more runs to go ahead 5-3.

Maddie Knepp led off with smack single to left. She was replaced by pinch runner Cassidy Brush.

With one out, Renninger moved Brush up to third singling into center.

Autumn Dershem made sure they would not be stranded as she blasted a 2RBI double into center, scoring both runners on the play.

But Shikellamy refused to go away as they tied the contest once again, scoring two in the fourth.

Fisher came in to relieve Central Mountain starting pitcher Knepp and completely shut down the Braves’ offense.

But the home team would start to extend its lead in the bottom of the inning, thanks to three Braves’ miscues.

Lenner and pinch runner Caitlyn Cooper both scored in the innings.

With the 2-run lead going into the sixth, the Wildcats sent 11 batters to the plate en route to the 8-run onslaught.

After scoring seven runs, Jenny Skow ended the game officially as she roped her second single of the inning and brought home Wetzel.

Central Mountain is back in action Friday as it travels to State College.
