Henry, Mifflin County tops State College in opener

REEDSVILLE – They came out firing.
Mifflin County came out in the first inning of their opening game of their Little League All-Star playoff game against State College ready for action.
The “Purple and White” plated six runs in the first inning and then two in the second to hold onto the victory late, winning 8-4.
Mifflin County hurler Arika Henry was deadly accurate on the mound striking out 12 on the night.
Going into the fifth inning, Henry allowed just two hits.
She finished with giving up just three on the night.
Despite being down early, State College rallied with three runs in the fifth but it wasn’t enough.
Offensively, Savanah Powell posted a double and an inside the park Home run and four RBIs on the afternoon.
Teammate Kaitlyn Lefevre also posted two hits to lead their team.
In the first inning, State College opened the game, taking a 1-0 lead.
Jess Hawbaker led off the game with a double. She advanced to third hustling on a fielders’ choice.
Ava Babcock singled in Hawbaker for the lead.
But Mifflin County never flinched.
In the bottom of the inning Mifflin County made its move.
Lefevre led off with a single.
Henry helped her own cause by blasting an RBI triple, tying things at one.
With one out, Powell smoked a double into the outfield, bringing in Henry. She also scored on the play via a State College miscue.
Alexis O’Brien singled to keep the momentum going.
Alaina Sharp put down a bunt single.
Dakota Harshbarger brought Home O’Brien with a single of her own. However, Sharp was thrown out trying to score on the play.
Rachel Saldubehere continued things with a single.
Both Harshbarger and Saldubehere moved up on a Katey Riden hit.
Lefevre locked up two RBIs with a single, making it 6-0.
Mifflin County struck out the side in the second.
In the bottom of the inning, Mifflin County scored two.
Henry reached on a second miscue, setting the stage for Powell.
Powell sizzled a shot that scooted out into the right field corner, allowing her and Henry to both score for the 2-run Home run.
Both defenses took over from there.
In the fifth, State College made the most of the three Mifflin County errors to pull to within four but it was too little too late as Mifflin County went into the victory.
