Kibe takes state title; adds his name to MC’s Wall of Fame

By BRIAN CARSON

HERSHEY – Trey Kibe became the first sophomore in county history to win a state championship when he downed Lower Dauphin’s Clayton Ulrey 6-2 in the 160-pound final Saturday evening at the PIAA Class 3A championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.

Kibe (41-1) scored the opening takedown on a deep double leg shot late in the first period. Kibe escaped to start the second for a 3-0 advantage before Ulrey (40-2) scored a takedown off his own to make it 3-2. The Husky sophomore escaped to end the middle frame 4-2. Kibe countered an Ulrey shot for the decisive takedown and the victory.

“It feels great. I felt strong and I knew I could block his shots. It’s nice to know after coming here as a freshman last year and not placing that all my hard work paid off,” Kibe said. “I want to be a three-time champion, so I still have a lot of work to do.”

Mifflin County now owns four straight state titles with Kibe joining Hayden (2016) and Trent Hidlay (2017-18). The last time the county had a run of four straight state champs occurred from 1978-1980 when Lewistown’s Ken Whitsel (1978) and Chief Logan’s Joe Heller (1978-79) and Lew Copenhaver (1980) won titles.

Kibe reached the finals with a 7-2 domination of Luca Frinzi of Bethlehem Catholic in the semifinals.

Christian Fisher, nursing sore ribs, went 0-2 and saw his chance of being only the seventh three-time state medalist in county history end. Fisher (31-10) ends his career with a record of 116-44 with two state medals, three district crowns and one Northwest Regional title.

Nic Allison (1-2) and Blaine Davis (0-2) also qualified for states and failed to reach the podium for the Huskies. Allison finished his freshman season 35-5, while Davis went 28-11 as a junior.

Juniata’s Tyler Wileman (28-7), who placed fourth in the state a year ago in Class 2A, failed to reach the podium going 0-2 at states. Wileman, a Lock Haven commit, ends his career with a 122-39 record.
