Penn State Shoots Past Purdue For 72-61 Victory

Frazier, Carter lead the way in B1G victory over Boilermakers

 

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – A strong shooting night and a balanced offensive attack led the Penn State women’s basketball team to a big 72-61 win over Purdue Thursday evening in Big Ten action at the Bryce Jordan Center.

 

Penn State finished the game shooting a season-best 50 percent (26-for-52) from the field while four Lady Lions registered double-digit points.

 

Junior Siyeh Frazier put together a career night as she scored a career-best 18 points while also leading the team with nine rebounds and four assists. Senior Amari Carter also chipped in a season high-tying 18 points. Junior Jaida Travascio-Green tied her season high with 14 points, while sophomore Kamaria McDaniel rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 points.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Boilermakers scored the game’s first basket, but Penn State used five points from Frazier to help fuel a 10-2 streak over the next three minutes as the Lady Lions gained an early 10-4 edge just over four minutes into the game.
  • Purdue pulled within three at 12-9 five minutes later, but McDaniel and Carter followed with back-to-back three-pointers to put Penn State up 18-9. The Boilermakers scored the final five points of the quarter, but Penn State still held an 18-14 lead heading into the second term.
  • Four points from freshman Lauren Ebo and a Travascio-Green three-pointer comprised a 7-2 Penn State run to open the second quarter and stretch the Lady Lion lead to 25-16 with 7:13 on the clock.
  • The Boilermakers wouldn’t get closer than five for the remainder of the first half as the Lady Lions answered every Purdue basket and took a 35-28 lead into the break.
  • Carter hit a three-pointer from NBA range and Frazier followed with a conventional three-point play to open the second half as Penn State got out to its largest lead yet at 41-28 less than a minute into the third quarter.
  • Purdue rattled off a 13-4 streak over the next 3:48 to trim the Penn State lead down to 45-41 with 4:36 left in the third quarter. Frazier then scored six-straight Penn State points and Travascio-Green added a layup as the Lady Lions’ 8-1 run re-extended their advantage to 11 at 53-42 with 2:19 left on the third-quarter clock.
  • The Boilermakers scored six of the final eight points of the third quarter, but Penn State still controlled a 55-48 advantage heading into the final quarter.
  • Purdue clawed back within four after making the first two baskets of the fourth quarter, but four points from both Frazier and McDaniel pushed the PSU lead back to double digits at 63-52 with just over six minutes to play.
  • Five-straight points from Carter ran Penn State’s lead to 14 at 68-54 two minutes later.
  • Purdue wasn’t able to get closer than eight the rest of the way as the Lady Lion offense kept rolling and Penn State sealed the 72-61 victory.
