Lady Lions Open Big Ten Tournament Wednesday Vs. Wisconsin

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The No. 12 seed Penn State women’s basketball begins postseason play Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. when the Lady Lions take on No. 13 Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament from Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The game will be broadcast nationally on the Big Ten Network.

OPENING TIPS

SCOUTING WISCONSIN

  • Wisconsin claimed the No. 13 seed in the Big Ten Tournament after wrapping up the regular season at 13-17 overall and 4-14 in Big Ten play.
  • The Badgers’ four conference wins came over Illinois (75-67, Feb. 20), Michigan State (79-62, Feb. 14), Nebraska (70-69, Jan. 27) and Purdue (76-69, Dec. 31).
  • Marsha Howard wrapped up the regular season averaging team-best marks of 14.5 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
  • Imani Lewis added 12.2 points and 7.6 boards per contest.

 

AGAINST THE BADGERS

  • Penn State swept the regular-season series against Wisconsin this season.
  • The Lady Lions earned a 71-64 win in Happy Valley on Jan. 3 before picking up a 65-59 road victory in Madison on Jan. 24.
  • The season sweep marked Penn State’s first sweep of the Badgers since the 2011-12 season.
  • The Lady Lions shot 39.2 percent (49-for-125) from the field in the two wins over the Badgers, while holding Wisconsin to a combined clip of 35.4 (40-for-113) percent.
  • Teniya Page averaged 19.5 points per game in the two wins combined, while Amari Carter notched 12.5 points per contest. Kamaria McDaniel and Jaida Travascio-Green both added 8.0 points per game.

 

SWEET SWEEP

  • The Lady Lions beat the Badgers 71-64 on Jan. 3 in Happy Valley before picking up a 65-59 road victory on Jan. 24 in Madison, Wisc. to complete the season sweep of Wisconsin.
  • It marked Penn State’s first season sweep of the Badgers since the 2011-12 season.
  • PSU used a strong defensive effort and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch to capture the 71-64 win over the Badgers on Jan. 3. The Lady Lions held a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter before holding the Badgers to a 26.7 percent (4-for-15) clip from the field in the final term. Penn State went 13-for-18 (72.2 percent) from the charity stripe, including 10-for-10 in the final 1:21, to seal the win.
  • Penn State then held off a late Wisconsin charge for the Jan. 24 65-59 road Wisconsin trimmed a 13-point Penn State lead down to three in the final minute, but junior Siyeh Frazier pulled down a key offensive rebound before senior Teniya Page drained three free throws in the final 12 seconds to seal the victory.

 

TOURNEY TIME

  • March Madness is here and the Lady Lions open up postseason play in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Wednesday against Wisconsin.
  • Penn State will be looking for its first Big Ten Tournament championship since its back-to-back tourney titles in 1995 and 1996.
  • The Lady Lions will be playing as the No. 12 seed for the first time in program history after finishing the regular season 12-17 overall and 5-13 in conference action.
  • Penn State will be looking to win its first round game for the second year in a row after defeating Illinois (83-57) in last season’s tourney opener.
  • The Lady Lions are 2-0 all-time against Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament, but have not faced the Badgers in the postseason since the 2006 tournament.

 

FIRST TEAM ALL-B1G

  • Senior Teniya Page was named a 2019 Consensus First Team All-Big Ten honoree, as voted by the conference’s coaches and media.
  • Page is the seventh player in program history with three or more first team accolades, and first since Maggie Lucas (2010-14). Page earned second team honors as a freshman before garnering first team plaudits in her final three years in the blue and white, making her a four-time All-Big Ten selection.
  • Page continued her stellar career in her senior campaign by finishing the regular season averaging 19.4 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. The Chicago native’s 19.4 points per contest rank second-best in the Big Ten and 33rd in all of Division I.

  • The winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup advances to Thursday’s second round to take on No. 5 Ohio State at approximately 2:30 p.m.
