Lady PV Rams Shut out Indians

By BRIAN CARSON

MIFFLINTOWN – Penns Valley exploded for 15 hits, three of them home runs, in a 12-0 victory over the Indians Monday afternoon. The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Coupled with the offensive explosion, the Rams had a standout effort from Kendra Bumgardner in the circle. The Penns Valley sophomore threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts and only one walk.

“She was humming the ball in there, hitting her spots. She looked really good. All of our pitchers are throwing the ball well this year. They are feeding off of each other,” Penns Valley coach Tessa Deardorff said.

Juniata coach Dave Cisney had nothing but praise for the Rams

“She’s a good pitcher. She throws hard and hits her spots. Her delivery threw our timing off and some of our girls weren’t getting around on it. Weáre going to work on that this week in practice,” Juniata coach Dave Cisney said. That’s why I like playing these Mountain League teams. You get to see better hitting and pitching to prepare us for the Tri-Valley League.”

Kailen Winkelblech had three hits, two were home runs with four RBIs and Kaylah Thompson had three hits, a homer and three RBIs for Penns Valley.

âWeáve been telling them all season if they keep hitting the ball good things are going to happen. We are definitely a good hitting team. We’ve been scoring lots of runs and obviously thatás great to see,” Deardorff said. Even better, weáre holding teams to limited runs.”

The Rams (7-4) scored five runs in the second when Winkelblech lead off with a jack to left. Morgan Hurd and Devan Stoner had back-to-back singles and Allie O’Brien brought them both home with a single up the middle. Thompson ended the scoring with a two-run homer to straight-away center.

Losing pitcher Ally Misal gave up all five runs and was chased in the second for Abby Adair.

“I always expect a good game from Penns Valley. We beat them last year by a run. They hit the ball real well,” Cisney said. “Ally is a good pitcher. She hits her spots well. She had them off-balance the first time through the lineup and thatás what we expect. We try to get her through the lineup and then speed things up with Abby. These better hitting teams adjust their timing and make good contact. They are a good hitting team. I give them credit.”

Penns Valley added a run in the third on a Stoner RBI double. The Rams added four in the fourth thanks to RBI knocks from Bumgardner and Avelyn Van Heyst. Winkelblech followed with her second home run of the game – a two run shot to left-center.

It was exciting. After Easter it was good to get back and do what we did. The (home run) pitches were high and outside, just where I like them,” Winkelblech said. “It was good to come out like we did. We played a good game today and hit the ball really well.”

The top four of the Penns Valley lineup went 10-for-16 with three homers and nine RBIs.

“Honestly, we came out a little slow at the gate. They needed to wake up and they did. They are on a win streak right now and itás awesome to see,” Deardorff said. “They keep hitting the ball and playing tough. Our top of the lineup gets on base and does what we need to do. Kaylah and Kailen had great games today.”

The Rams, winners of five of their last six games, added two runs in the fifth when Thompson doubled home O’Brien and Winkelblech had an RBI single to center, plating O’Brien.

The Indians (4-7) had a hit from Mya Rush in the first and a double from Hunter Johns in the fourth.

“Defensively, we played well. We had only one error and for the most part, thatás how we’ve played all season. We have a good defense,” Cisney said. “We just have to put the bat on the ball and start hitting better.”

Penns Valley hosts Tyrone while Juniata travels to Susquenita today.
