MC battles but falls to Tigers

BURNHAM – Though the scores did not show in their favor against Hollidaysburg, the Mifflin County boys and girls swim team went down fighting to the very end.

The Tigers took the girls meet by a final score of 110-59 while the boys fell 116-49 in front of a full house at the Juniata Valley YMCA in their final home meet of the season.

“I thought they did great. This was the very last home meet of the season so I am really, really pleased on how the team has progressed throughout the season at all levels,” Mifflin County coach Houtz . “We have everyone from our seasoned swimmers to our new swimmers that improved through the season.”

Leading the way for the Huskies on the night was lone first place winner, Ali McCurdy. McCurdy led the way in the girls 200-yard freestyle with a top time of 2:20.82. But she wasn’t finished done there as she placed third in the girls 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:14.75. In team swimming, McCurdy finished third as a member of the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Teamed with Jenna Kile, Claire Mulkey and Allison Besch the foursome finished with a time of 2:03.38. McCurdy also was part of the successful third place 400-meter relay team that finished with a time of 4:34.64.

She was teamed with Besch, Mulkey and Daviana Seguine. Rounding out the girls relay team that placed Monday was the 200-yard medley consisting of Kile, Seguine, Rachael Spotts and Kaitlyn Eckley with a time of 2:20.50. In the girls 200-yard IM Spotts battled her way to a third place finish with a time of 2:59.03.

Teammate Besch also finished third but it would be the 50-yard freestyle that she placed with a time of 28.27 good enough for a PIAA qualifying performance. Two Huskies finished in the 100-yard butterfly as Kile and Spotts finished with times of 1:20.51 and 1:24.32, good enough for a second and third place respectively.

Besch continued her streak of top three finishes placing third in the 100-yard freestyle with a finishing time of 1:06.50. Claire Mulkey finished as runner up in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:50.80. Seguine and Kristen Neavling rounded out the scoring for the Huskies as they placed second and third in the 100-yard breaststroke with times of 1:25.42 and 1:32.23, respectively.

The boys squad opened its night with a second place finish in the 200-medley relay. The group consisting of Zack Bonson, Drew Kline, Evan Becker and Brenden Durst posted a 2:01.91.

Kline continued to help put up the points for Mifflin County as he posted a second place finish in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 2:13.

The finish was good enough to qualify for the PIAA. Kline also had a PIAA qualifying time in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a tally of 1:09.55. In the boys 400 relay team, Kline was also a member that helped his team to a second place finish. Teamed with Durst, Bonson and Evan Becker the crew finished with a 3:55.99.

Bonson also had a night to remember also placing in the 200 IM. His third place time of 2:18.80 was PIAA qualifying. His time of 56.04 in the 100 freestyle was also enough for second as well as a PIAA qualifying mark.

Teammates Becker and Norris Hunter placed second and third in the 50 freestyle. Becker finished with a PIAA time of 24.59 while Norris finished third with a time of 29.07. Becker wasn’t finished there as he came up strong in the 500 freestyle with another PIAA qualifying time of 5:28.92 good enough for second.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the combination of Durst, Jovan Bacon, Luke Felton and Hunter finished with a time of 2:08.21 good enough for a third place finish. Felton had his time to shine in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a third place time of 1:38.25. Durst rounded out the night for the Huskies with a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke.

His time of 1:16.64 was also a PIAA qualifying time. The group will be back in action when it travels to the Penn State Natatorium on Feb. 28th and March 1st. 11. The finish was good enough to qualify for the PIAA. Kline also had a PIAA qualifying time in the 100 butterfly, finishing with a tally of 1:09.55.
