LEWISTOWN – They battled to the end.

Despite falling behind 2-0 early on in their opening contest against Cedar Cliff, the Mifflin County girls volleyball team rallied for a win in the third game and then proceeded to go toe-to-toe with the Colts in the final game, losing 25-19.

In the end, Cedar Cliff took the series 3-1 (25-11, 25-10, 22-25, 25-19).

With their crowd behind them, the Huskies played tough and got better as the match went on.

“It took us a little time to get momentum but I think our focus this season, and we’ve talked about this, is growth and building on what we can do. We need to focus on our abilities and hone in on them,” Mifflin County coach Krystena Brown said. “That third set we started getting in there and moving and they started communicating.  They started seeing each other on the court and realizing each other’s abilities and relying on each other. They just pushed forward and hopefully we can take that momentum we did gain and take that into our next game and start right off the bat with it.

In the third game, ironically the Colts took the first three points, taking a 3-0 lead.

But this time Mifflin County was able to muster a scoring run if its own. Kiana Sechler got her team started with four consecutive service points, giving them the 4-3 advantage. In the run, Audrey Jordan and Jade Morningstar had crucial blocks to keep the drive alive.

However, Cedar Cliff took the lead back on two consecutive points.

The two would stay neck-in-neck until it looked like the Colts were going to go on another long service, building up a 17-12 advantage.

But the Lady Huskies weren’t going to let this one slip away.

After a sideout giving Mifflin County the ball, Sechler was back at the service line and the Huskies took advantage of the momentum.

She started her first serve with an ace and her team won a long volley on the next serve to inch closer at 13-7.

Sechler again pasted another ace and after winning two more consecutive long volleys, Mifflin County was back in the game, cutting it to 17-16.

A block by Jordan put the two teams in a deadlock at 17.

The tie would force Cedar Cliff to call its first time out.

Stopping the Huskies momentum lasted just a few minutes after they allowed just two points from the Colts to trail 19-17.

With Mifflin County winning the side out, the ball went into the hands of Jordan and she did not disappoint as she fired off three consecutive service points, two of the three were aces, putting Mifflin County in the lead for the latest in any of the previous games.

The 21-19 lead was enough for the Huskies is they were able to exchange side outs for the rest of the game for the win.

In the fourth game, Mifflin County came out smoking building a 5-1 advantage. Sechler had the sizzling serve working as she combined with a service point from Maddison Meyers for the early lead.

However, the Colts played spoiler on the momentum as Abby Shultz picked up five consecutive service points for her team, bringing her crew back in the game, taking a 7-5 advantage.

But Mifflin County would stay with the seasoned Colts team until midway through the contest as the visitors built up a 17-12 lead.

But Mifflin County was not going away that easy as they pounded their way back into the contest, getting as close a 17-15 before Cedar Cliff would finally take over momentum, ending it as a 25-19 victory to end the match 3-1.

In the two opening contests, Cedar Cliff got off to an early lead and built things up from there winning 25-11 and 25-10.

Mifflin County is on the road today as they face Carlisle.
