MC Minors sizzle late but fall to Clearfield

LEWISTOWN – You can’t win them all.

But it’s how well you competed.

And the kids from Mifflin County showed true heart tonight.

But despite putting on a great late comeback attempt, the Mifflin County Minor League All-Stars fell to a very tough Clearfield team Monday night 9-6.

It was quite a battle at the mound as Mifflin County hurler Malaina Maxwell went up against Clearfield’s Joell Henry.

Maxwell finished with 11 strike outs while Henry tallied the same.

The Mifflin County offense got sizzling late in the final two innings to finish with 11 hits while Clearfield managed eight.

“Hats off to Clearfield tonight, they really hit the ball. They were aggressive and had some very nice hits to the outfield, said Mifflin County coach J.B. Baker. “We made a few mistakes on defense but I thought Malaina pitched a very good game overall. But hats off to Clearfield. They hit the ball.”

This was the second meeting between the two teams as Mifflin County took a 4-2 victory at Clearfield.

Mifflin County opened the contest as the visitors and plated the first run of the game.

Maxwell helped her cause right off the bat as she hustled out an infield single. She stole second and moved up to third on a wild pitch.

Teammate Drue Moore followed her own base as she took the walk.

With a past ball to Emily Porch, Maxwell beat the throw from the catcher, making it 1-0.

Mifflin County held Clearfield in the bottom of the inning as Maxwell struck out 3-of-4 batters to end the inning.

However, Henry kept the Mifflin County bats quiet in the second inning, allowing her team to jump back into the game.

They did just that in the bottom of the second.

Allison Fedder tripled to right field and later scored on a wild pitch, tying things at one.

Mifflin County took back the lead in the third as they were able to push another run through.

Maxwell, who finished with a 3-for-3 afternoon, poked her second hit of the game to centerfield, giving her a double to start off the inning.

She moved up to third on a Moore single.

Porch hustled out an infield single allowing Maxwell to score.

The momentum started to switch in the bottom of the inning as Clearfield was able to claw and scratch its way for three runs in its part of the third, making it a 4-2 ball game.

The guests added to its lead to 6-2, posting a 2-run fourth while keeping the “Purple and Black Attack” bats in check.

Highlighting the inning for Clearfield was a 2-run inside-the-park home run by Hailey Billotte.

However, Mifflin County wasn’t going to down without a fight as it was able to chip into the lead to make it a 2-run ball game.

With one out, Ava Baker started off the inning with a smash into centerfield.

Lexi Truitt followed with a single of her own.

Carly Dickson’s RBI single to right, cut into the lead at 6-3.

Truitt later scored thanks to a single by Mya Felmlee, making it a 6-4 game.

But Clearfield battled back in the bottom of the inning to add to its lead, posting three runs.

Mifflin County gave it one last blast to try to tie the game.

They came close by scoring two runs and had the bases loaded.

However, like most of the contest, Clearfield had an answer and was able to keep the bats at bay to finish out with the 9-6 win.

Even with the loss, the group from MC have one more chance as they head back to play Clearfield on the road for a winner-take-all championship game Wednesday.
