Penns Valley boys nearly complete comeback against Clearfield, falls 3-2

It not always how you start but how you finish is what counts.

Despite being down 3-0 to Clearfield, the Penns Valley boys soccer team battled back in it and almost completed the comeback attempt before falling 3-2.

“Heading to Clearfield tonight, we knew that we had a tough match ahead against an experienced and skilled team. My guys came out pretty flat at the starting whistle and really didn’t gain momentum until the 2nd half,” said Penns Valley Coach Ken Gore. “It was a very physical match and at halftime I told them they must step up and start matching the physical play of Clearfield, which they did. 16 minutes into the 2nd, our more physical attack brought a hard-fought goal as Zach Heckman challenged the keeper for a ball which rebounded to Seth Hall for an open net strike. This helped us gain a lot of confidence which we carried into the 74th minute for our 2nd goal from Andrew Boeckel. I was extremely proud of my guys for going hard in the 2nd and refusing to concede anything to our opponent. We continued to attack hard for the final 5 minutes and had several chances as we kept the defense on their heels. I really believe that if we had a few more minutes to work, we would have tied the game. As it was, the 3-2 loss is in the books – but I told my players that I was nearly as happy as if we had won because they fought, challenged, and worked from behind to compete against a strong and physical team.”

The first half belonged to Clearfield as Nicholas Ryan got the scoring started at 5:37.

Less than a minute later, Luke Winters picked up a penalty kick goal at 6:07, making it 2-0 very early on.

Clearfield finished the first half scoring on an Andrew Lopez unassisted goal at 42:27.

In the second, Penns Valley began its march back into the game when Seth Hall  with an assist from Zach Heckman 56:17 put the Rams on the board.

Penns Valley refused to go away without a fight and cut it to one on an Andrew Boeckel blast with 74:21 left.

However, the Rams ran out of time as Clearfield went on for the victory.
