Penns Valley tops Juniata in volleyball action

The Penns Valley girls volleyball showed that they are a forced to be reckoned with this season as they defeated a strong up and coming Juniata team that is much improved from last year’s squad.

It took just three games for the Rams to pick up the win as Penns Valley took the series 25-8, 25-6 and 25-13.

Juniata played with heart all night and showed glimpses of strong play but it would be the relentless talent of Penns Valley that proved to be the deciding factor in this contest.

In the first game, the Rams opened strong, posting the first four points.

Picking up the service points in the run was Emily Heltman.

Juniata battled right back to make it 4-3 as the Indians got two strong serves from Susanna Ranck.

However, Penns Valley was able to extend things to a 5- point advantage when Marissa Stecko added onto the lead with three more strong service points.

After a side out and a point by Juniata, the Rams increased the lead to seven with Isabella Culver who added four more service points, making it 13-5.

Penns Valley got stronger as the game grew longer as they led 18-8 when the Rams put the ball into the server Hailey Coursen. Coursen put the game on ice as she rattled off six consecutive points to end the game at 25-8.

In the second game, the Indians and Rams battled back and forth as Penns Valley held a 7-5 advantage as the ball went to Anna Butler proceeded to hit 17-consecutive points, including two aces, putting the Rams on the threshold of winning, 24-5.

Minutes later, Penns Valley put the game out of reach, 25-6.

In the final game, the Indians had their best game of the night finishing with 13 but like they did for much of the night Penns Valley had an answer and they won 25-13.
