Po and BEA boys tie in 2OT thriller

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – When two Mountain League soccer teams the caliber of Bald Eagle Area and Philipsburg-Osceola get together, there is no such easy thing as an easy goal.

Goals were hard to come by Thursday night as the two combined for two goals in a 1-1 double overtime stalemate.

“It was a good hard fought game. Both teams had opportunities to win the game,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jason Bair. “We had a one on one with a keeper. They had a one on one. Neither team made it. It was a hard fought game. I was disappointed in the outcome.”

Bald Eagle lead in shots on goal – By a 22-15 margin.

The Eagles also held the advantage in corner opportunities by a 6-4 margin.

Philipsburg-Osceola’s goalie Jaylen Johnson tallied seven stops while the Eagles goalkeeper Conner Robinson finished with five.

In the first half, the Eagles were able to show its transition games numerous times, led by Garrett Giedroc. It was a very defensive effort early on as both teams were trying to establish the momentum on the offensive side only to be sent back empty handed by the others defense.

After 20-minutes into the contest, the two team combined for five total shots, three by BEA and two by the Mounties.

Both brought uptempo styles into the contest.

The game had a post season-type feel to it.

Both were nothing short of playing full force for the entire first half.

But when the buzzer sounded to end the first half, the two were scoreless.

The future of the Bald Eagle boys and girls soccer teams were on hand to show their talents and be honored and recognized.

As the Eagles came out for the second half, the group was treated to a line of 140 future Bald Eagles, cheering them on.

After a scoreless first half, the game grew more intense with every tick of the clock. Both teams had numerous chances and momentum changes but had nothing to show as both defenses were nearly impenetrable.

In the half,  the Bald Eagles led 6-4 in shots on goal.

The Mounties struck first game when speedster James Tew broke free and found a hole in the Eagles back third and sent it home, making it 1-0 at the 36:36 mark.

But the Eagles would tie things 16-minutes later when Tim Durachko scores on an assist in transition from teammate Nicholas Zink with 20:04 left.

Neither team were able to muster any more goals despite numerous close calls and the game went into the first of two overtime periods.

Bald Eagle will be back in action Monday as they travel to Penns Valley.
