Rogers No-hitter vaults Lady Raiders to D6 title

In their third and most meaningful game of the year, the Bellefonte Lady Raiders Met Tyrone for the District 6 AAAA title.

In a very defensive effort, Bellefonte batters Lily Gardner and Sara DeHaas got ahold of Tyrone pitching and made their hits count, posting the only two runs of the ball game.

On the mound, Bellefonte’s Lexi Rogers was cool under pressure as her and her defense brought it’s A-game as she tossed a no-hitter in capturing the District 6 championship 2-0 over the Eagles. In the process she also notched 10 strike outs in the winning effort.

Tyrone Pitcher Cate Baran absorbed the loss despite striking out 12. She allowed just five hits in the contest.

Picking up hits in the contest was Sara DeHaas (Home run), Gardner (triple),Emily Pugh (single), MaKenna Port (single) and Mallorie Smith (single).

“I’m so proud of these kids. They came out and played really really well. They came today wanting to get number 21 and they did,” said Bellefonte coach Travis Foster. “For our seniors this is four of them. I am super proud of these kids.”

After both pitchers boasted scoreless innings in the first and second, Bellefonte got its first run when Gardner smacked a pitch that hit the left field wall and as she was sliding In For the triple the ball was overthrown at third, allowing Gardner to keep motoring and then finishing with the first score of the game.

Tyrone had its limited chances on the base paths due to walks or hit batsmen but each time the Red Raiders regained their composure and kept them at bay.

With the two teams battling defensively throughout, the biggest play of the game came in the sixth inning as Sara DeHaas smoked a Baran pitch over the centerfield fence, giving the Lady Raiders a little more insurance as it went into the Eagles’ last two at bats.

But with the lead and the momentum, Rogers and company shut down Tyrone in their last two at bats to earn the hard fought victory and earn another title.
