State College thwarts Lady Huskies chance at splitting season series

By Kenny Varner

STATE COLLEGE – It was a tough night on the diamond for the Mifflin County softball team in its bid to tie the season series with rival State College.

Despite home runs from Huskies’ hitters Gianna Hoppel and Alyssa Souders, the Mifflin County offense was kept in check for most of the night as the Little Lions went onto the 13-3 five inning contest Friday night at State College’s Community Field.

State College’s Sophia Keene picked up the win while Cassidy Wilson took the loss.

Keene tossed a three run, 5-hitter against the Huskies.

State College got multiple hits from Addie Wasikonis (3-for-4 2runs), Morgan Arnold (3-for-4 HR 3 runs, 2RBIs), Caitlyn Brannon (2-for-3 4RBIs, 3 runs) and Ashley Thomas (2-for-3 2RBIs).

State College finished with four home runs. Two came from the bat of Brannon who launched two in the second inning.

“State College played outstanding in every aspect of the game. The hit the ball well, they were tough defensively. But we also allowed a lot of those runs in the second inning. We should have been out of that with only one rumor no runs. We had the opportunity to make those outs, we just simply didn’t make them,” Mifflin County coach Jack McCurdy said. “We had two pitchers throw tonight and I thought Cass threw well they just a good job hitting her pitches. I thought Jade(Morningstar ) did a good job coming in relief. They are just patient at the plate.”

In the bottom of first, State College got on the board first.

With one out, Arnold singles down third.

She then scored on a double by Brandi Triebold, making it 1-0.

Mifflin County tied the game in the top of the second with one swing of the bat from Hoppel. Hoppel took a 3-2 pitch and sent a lazer-shot over the left centerfield fence.

But in the second, things fell apart as the Little Lions found the gaps and the fences numerous times in the 8-run inning.

Brannon untied the game, hitting a solo shot, making it 2-1.

Ashley Thomas followed with a single but then was forced out on a fielders choice by Carsyn Spencer. Spencer was hurt on her run to first and was replaced by Macee Lamb.

Wasikonis put runners on second and third as she blasted a double to right field.

Lamb scored as did Wasikonis as Arnold roped a 2-run single.

Ashley Blumenthal joined Arnold on base with a double.

Brandi Triebold loaded the bases as she reached on a Husky miscue.

With the bases loaded, McKenzie Shannon sent a long fly ball that cleared the fence for the grand slam.

With Brannon stepping in for the second time in the inning, the result was the same as she ended the scoring in the inning with a solo home run, making it an 9-1 advantage.

Both teams went scoreless in the third.

Mifflin County tried to chip its was back into game, scoring one in the fourth.

Chloe Fitzgerald singled to start things off.

Wilson singled in Fitzgerald, making it 9-2.

However, State College rallied back to score two more in the bottom of the inning to go back by eight runs.
