Young Eagles football team moves to 4-0

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – Early this season, the Bald Eagle offense has been know for its quick strike attacks and the constant pounding they have put on their opponents.

Friday night the Eagles once again quickly led Bishop Carroll 14-0.

But the Huskies defense was able to keep the Eagles’ offense at bay for the rest of the half and with no time showing on the clock into intermission, Bishop Carroll was able to cut the score to 14-6.

But the third quarter, the Eagles offense was back at it, scoring three times en route to the 35-6 victory.

“We didn’t play good the first half. They (Bishop Carroll) took away some of the things that took away our deep ball,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jesse Nagle said. “We were t hitting our check downs, the guys were open. We just weren’t hitting them. They did a nice job with their stunts upfront. We made some adjustments and I think that was kind of a wake up call for our guys.”

The Eagles were led on the ground by Blake Roberts. Roberts finished with 100-yards rushing and four touchdowns. His longest coming on a third quarter 45-yard run.

Roberts got involved defensively, intercepting a pass.

Quarterback Jaden Jones went 10-21-145 yards through the air. He scored as well. His 4-yard quarterback scamper capped the Eagles scoring.

Bishop Carroll was led by quarterback Jake Zazvrskey who finished with a hard fought 38-yard rushing performance while also going 6-11-75. He highlighted the night with a 25-yard hook up to teammate Sam Laurer as the buzzer sounded, ending the first half on a high note for his team.

“It was huge. We fought hard and didn’t give up too much in the first half. We stayed within one score there,” Bishop Carroll coach Sean Billings said. “We just told our guys we just have to find a way to finish. This is two games where we are in the thick of things going into the half. Last week we were down 10. This week we’re down by one score so we just need to find a way.”

The Eagles got the opening kick to start the contest.

Jones went right to work as he marched his team downfield for a 90-yard opening drive which included to hook up passes to Matt Reese. The first was for 16-yards and the other was for seven.

Roberts and teammate Gage McClenahan led the running game downfield.

With 8:25 left in the first, Roberts blasted in from two out. However, the PAT was unsuccessful, making it 6-0.

The Huskies committed its first miscue on its first possession of the night.

Bald Eagles’ Cael Gardner was at the right place at the right time as he fell on a fumble, giving Bald Eagle the ball back on the Bishop Carroll 10.

Two plays later, Roberts scores from three yards out and with the successful 2-point conversion, Bald Eagle led 14-0 with 5:28 left in the first.

From there both defenses took control of the game.

After a potential scoreless second quarter, the Huskies had a chance to cut into the lead.

Two long passes in 13 seconds, ended in a 25-yard hook up from Zazvrskey to Laurer, put BC back in the ball game as they cut it to 14-6 at the intermission.

Bishop Carroll got the ball to start the second half with a chance to cut more into the lead or tie the game.

However, like it has for most of the season, the Eagles defense stood up and got the ball back to its explosive offense.

And much like the first quarter, the Eagles were able to score three times in the third, two TDS from Roberts and one from Jones, giving the Eagles the insurance it needed to go onto the 35-6 victory.

With the win, the Eagles improved to 4-0 while Bishop Carroll falls to 1-3.

Bishop Carroll finished with 129 total yards while the Eagles tallied 337.

Bald Eagle will take its undefeated record on the road next week to play a tough Central team.
