BEA volleyball heads to title tilt

WINGATE – Onward and upward.

Carrying a 17-0 record going into their District VI Semifinals, the Bald Eagle Volleyball team went up a once-beaten West Shamokin team.

Going in with a very Workman-like fashion, the Lady Bald Eagles wasted little time taking care of the Wolves, winning 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22).

Leading the way was Lacee Barnhart had a strong evening, finishing with 2 aces, 11 kills and 10 digs. Lexi Skripek had an Ace, four sets and 16 digs.

Teammate Grace Hugar has 19 kills and seven digs.

Rounding things out for top performers was Madison Rockey with one kill, 37 sets and 13 digs.

“You can from watching and all the volleyball we’ve played that they are good at zeroing in at the end. In the first game you could see they came out a little nervous, which was very surprising from my end,” Bald Eagle coach Larry Campbell said. “We had a couple errors that we don’t usually make. Then we settled in and ended up going after them and winning by 10. Second set, it was something like 20-19 we were up and ended things on a 5-1 run.

In set three we made that push it was about 20-14 and then we stopped. Give them credit. They fought back making it 22-21. But we were able to pull it out.”

In the first set, both teams went right after each other in a back-and-forth nail biter to start off the night.

Neither team was able to pull ahead by more than one early on.

With the game tied at nine, the Eagles started to make their move.

Rockey got things going from the service line, notching two consecutive service points thanks to a net Wolves net violation and a spike from the front line, making it 12-10.

After a Wolves side out, the West Shamokin added chipped into to their lead, posting a side out and a service point from Lexi Young, cutting it to 12-11.

From there, the game belonged to Bald Eagle Area as it rolled off six consecutive service points to pad its advantage to 18-11.

Leading the charge was Hugar with five service points.

The Eagles were finding all the empty spots on the floor.

That would be all the cushion the Eagles would need as they rolled to the 25-15 victory.

Things weren’t as easy for the Lady Eagles’ in the second game as the Wolves stayed with them for much of the game before the Lady Eagles would get its offense going.

Leading 22-20, the Eagles went on another scoring run as Skripek finished things off with four service points.

In the finale, though the Eagles found themselves down by three points at one point, the group never got flustered and went right back to work to hammer out a series clinching 25-22 victory.

With the win, the Eagles move on into the title tilt where they will play Central Cambria Saturday at 1pm at the Altoona Field House.
