Bulldog Midgets top Eagles in thriller

By Kenny Varner

LEWISTOWN – In the night cap of the Central Keystone Cheer and Football League, two familiar teams went head-to-head in the midget championship as Burnham and McVeytown renewed its rivalry.
Trailing 6-0 early, the Burnham Bulldogs battled back with its potent running attack to take the title tilt 22-6.
It was a closer game than what the score provided as both defenses needed strong stops on both teams to keep the game in check.
Bulldog running back Kyler Everly was the workhorse for his team as he pounded, leaped and muscled his way to a 167-yard night on the ground. He also caught a pass for 22 yards that set up an eventual touchdown.
McVeytown was led on the ground by Eli Pennebaker who rushed for over 80 yards and also picked off one on defense.
“Its an awesome feeling. You can’t say enough about the kids. We have 13 that are leaving this year. I was never scared for minute. I know what the team could do. They looked good. Can’t be stopped,” said Burnham coach Anthony Everly. “The kids stepped up and did what they needed to do to win the ball game.”
McVeytown got on the board first, wasting little time by scoring on its first possession.
Starting on the Bulldogs 47, McVeytown went on a 6-play drive culminating in a 4-yard touchdown run by Pennebaker with 8:06 still showing in the first.
However, the point after was unsuccessful, keeping the score at 6-0.
“They played a great game tonight. The score was a little deceiving,” said McVeytown coach Mike Rishel. “We came out and played a little different offense and on defense and they played a heck of a game.”
Both defenses settled in and forced two possession each to turn over the ball.
At the beginning of the second quarter, the Bulldogs marched their way down field when they got a 70-yard run from Everly, tying it at 6-6.
With time running out in the first half, Burnham would take the lead going into the intermission.
The drive was sparked by a halfback option pass that had Daekon Schaeffer hit a wide open Everly on a 22-yard hook up.
Everly cashed it in for Burnham from three yards out, making it 14-6 with an Everly PAT kick.
In the second half, both teams provided some strong defensive efforts and kept the other team off the scoreboard until late in the contest.
Holding onto a 14-6 lead, Burnham scores a late touchdown to ice the game. It was Everly again that notched the touchdown. With the PAT kick by Everly, clinched the contest for Burnham, giving them their second consecutive title.
