One on One with Leah Echard

Editor’s note: Recently, Hometown Sports editor Kenny Varner sat down with Belleville Mennonite/ Huntingdon field hockey stand out Leah Echard and took a look back at her career and he present and future goals as she moves onto the next level as a member of the DeSales College .

HS: You’ve been in quite a weird situation playing two years as a member as the Belleville Mennonite field hockey team and two a member of the Huntingdon team when the Thunder could not get enough players to field a team. How was the transition for you?

LE: It was definitely hard at the start. It was tough going from a small private school to and play at a large public school. It was a big transition but I think my teammates really helped me in my transition well and we got used to the program. Being there for the last two years has definitely been a blessing. I’m glad that we had the connection with them. So that was good.

HS: Looking at that might make you adapt quickly to your next transition. The transition to playing college field hockey,

LE: Yes, it was nice to go to a small school to a large one and now to an even larger school. So yes, its definitely going to help.

HS: When you found out you were accepted, what was your first reaction?

LE: I was so excited! I knew the first minute I stepped on campus that that’s where I really wanted to go. Getting that acceptance letter was amazing!

HS: So your going to be a Bulldog. So where is the school located?

LE: Its in Allentown.

HS: Give me a little bit about your background. When did you start playing field hockey?

LE: Its a funny story. When I was in sixth grade my mom made me go to a Mifflin County Huskies clinic and I cried every single day. I said no Mom I don’t like field hockey. I was But she said “I played it. You’ll love it.” Then she shove me out the door.  But then I ended up loving it so I’m grateful that she shoved me out the door, I guess.

HS: You were in that amazing District 6 championship game that where BMS was down a player and still captured the title. Tell me your feelings after that game.

LE: It was crazy. It was unbelievable we won with 10 people in a District finals game.

HS: I was at that game and I was in awe after your player got hurt and your team rallied back to win.

LE: Yep, even down one your still playing. It was a great moment for sure.

HS: What Major have you decided on when you head to college? Or have you thought of one?

LE: Yes, I’m looking to get my Masters in forensic nursing.  It’s a little different but I’m excited for it.

HS: Have you or do you play any other sports?

LE: I used to play basketball and before that I did ballet and gymnastics. But field hockey for me is the one I’ve done the most.

HS: What advice would you give to somebody starting out playing field hockey?

LE: Keep the sport fun and remember why your doin it. If your playing to be the best don’t forget to have fun. Don’t get caught up on yourself and your ability and focus on your team.
