Penns Valley gets late PK to top Lady Eagles

By Kenny Varner

WINGATE – Sometimes Sports can break your heart. The other can provide a special moment, all depending on which side you are sitting on.

It was a hard hitting Mountain League battle when Penns Valley met up with Bald Eagle on the soccer field.

After dominating for most of the second half, the Bald Eagle Area girls soccer team continually were knocking on the door to a score.

However, a late penalty inside their own box provided Penns Valley with the best chance either team would get a chance to see the whole evening.

The Rams Danae Hurd faced off with Bald Eagle Area goalie Rachel Veneziano in a one-on-one showdown in a penalty kick.

The two glared at each other and when the whistle blew, Hurd slipped a shot just past the diving Veneziano, making it 1-0.

Despite a frenzy of movement and down in the Rams back-third, Bald Eagle was turned away the 7:54 to pick up the hard earned victory on a rainy Tuesday night at Alumni Stadium at Bald Eagle High School.

“They (Penns Valley) have a good defense. I was really impressed. Their coach does a good job. I can tell. They look good. They had a defense that was hard to break too,” Bald Eagle Area coach Jared Moore said. “I was very happy with the way we controlled the ball. A couple things here or there or a couple things could have happend and it’s a different outcome.”

In the first half, the teams were greeted by another rainstorm from Mother Nature. This in fact slowed the speed of the game as both teams were trying to establish itself in the others back-third.

However, the battle for most of the opening period ended up being played between the 20s, limiting the pressure on both goalies.

When the First ended,  the Rams outshot the Eagles 3-2.

But things changed in the second when the Lady Eagles’ were able to push the ball into the Rams’ end. Shot after shot, time after time, Bald Eagle could not a shot past goalie Kylie Aumon. She finished with four saves in the contest.

Then at the 7:54, the Rams on a rare moment in the Eagles end, picked up a penalty kick on a Bald Eagle violation inside the box mounting the showdown as Hurd battled Veneziano.

After the kick slipped past, the Rams’ defense was able to hold on from there.
