Seals top Wildcats in prime time action

By Kenny Varner

LOCK HAVEN – For the first twenty minutes of the first half, the Quick scoring Selinsgrove was held in check for the most part, held to a lone goal by the strong backline play of the Central Wildcats girls.

The lone goal came from middle shooter Marley Sprenkel.

However, in the final two and half minutes of the period, Sprenkel would find the goal two more times, taking a 3-0 lead at the half. Sprenkel finished with a hat trick, scoring five of her team’s six goal en route to the Seals 6-0 shut out over the Wildcats.

Also joining Sprenkel on the scoreboard was Lexi Hunselman who hit a goal with less than a minute to go in the contest.

The score could have been higher if not by the strong play of Central Mountain goal keeper Hailey Swortwood who turned away fifteen shots while her adversary in goal Alvia Ravy saved one.

Selinsgrove outshot Central Mountain 30-4 and benefited from 14 corner opportunities.

“We saw them in preseason and coming into the game we kind of knew what we were getting into. They have some big players in the middle of the field that we were able to take care of because we had some dynamic performances from people like Sloane Tressler, Hunter Barger. We were able to shut down and make them go around us,” Central Mountain coach Cole Black said. “I told them before the game that they had a center/forward who was a bit tricky and a bit smart about what she does and if we take care of her we would be fine. If you check their score sheet she might have scored all their goals tonight. But we did have some strong center-mid performances .”

Early on, the Wildcats defense worked well, stopping threat after threat with its back-line and goalie play.

Though the Wildcats were dodging allowing any kind of goal, the Seals offense continued to pound the ball down into the back-third and at the 22-minute mark, Sprenkel got loose a plastered the first of her five goals, making it 1-0.

After the first goal, Central Mountain once again clamped down for almost the rest of the entire first half.

But Sprenkel was able to get open and in the clear two more times before the half, giving the Seals a 3-0 advantage going into the intermission.

But breaking out of the half, Sprenkel again found a hole in the Wildcat defense and sent it home, only eight minutes into it.

Despite being down, Central Mountain refused to go away without a fight and was even able to go on two breakaways only to have them stopped cold by the backline play of the Seals.

But with 5:11left in the contest, Sprenkel scores her last goal of the night, upping it 5-0.

Teammate Lexi Hunselman scores on the final shot with 38 seconds left to lift her team to a 6-0 victory.

In the JV contest, the Seals also won, winning 1-0.

Central Mountain will be back in action Saturday at home as it hosts Jersey Shore at 11.
