State College Midgets escape with 18-6 win over Little Mingoes

By Kenny Varner

REEDSVILLE – The State College Midget football team had a battle on its hands Saturday in the Body and Soul Bowl against the Little Mingoes and its very stingy defense.

Despite a strong effort by the Mingoes on the defensive line of scrimmage, the Little Lions were able to claw and scratch its way to a 18-6 victory at Mitchell Field in the JVFL Bowl Weekend.

What looked like it was going to be an early runaway for the Lions was a slobber-knocker throughout.

State College quarterback Charlie Warren threw for 128 yards in the Little Lion victory.

Little Mingoes quarterback Chase Hartung threw for 79 yards for his team.

In the first quarter, the State defense held the Little Mingoes and started with the ball deep in Mingoe territory.

One play later, Warren found Sam Shaner for the 25-yard TD reception.

The Little Mingoes were stingy on the PAT, keeping the Little Lions from converting.

State College’s defense also made its presence known as it held the Mingoes for another 4-and-out.

Mixing up the run and the pass, the Little Lions moves down the field.

At the one-second mark of the first, State made it 12-0 on a pass from Warren to Shaner for the second time of the night.

Again, the Little Lions were held by the defense on the PAT.

The score would remain into the intermission.

The Little Mingoes would make a huge turnover early in the third when Chase Moore would recover a State College fumble after the Little Lions were driving.

Going into the final stanza, the Lions scored once again when Garlin Jackson scored from 10 yards out, upping it an 18-0 advantage.

But the Little Mingoes refused to go down without a fight as they reached the scoreboard when Hartung hit Garrett Miller on a 37-yard reception and a 15-yard TD reception to cut the lead to 12.

But it was too little too late as the Little Lions were able to hold onto the 18-6 victory.
