BELLEFONTE – Despite possessing a very opportunistic defense in its contest against Tyrone, the Bellefonte girls basketball team had its shooting woes throughout, falling to the Eagles 59-44 at home Tuesday night.

Leading the charge offensively was Mal Smith with a 20-point effort.

Tyrone also got a 20-point night from Sydney Shaw and a 10-point effort from teammate Steph Ramsey.

“We could not hit a basket from three feet in tonight.  At halftime we were 5-18 from within three feet of the basket,” Bellefonte coach Adam Gearhart said. “I don’t know if we were rushing things or we were going too slow but that’s 26 points we left on the floor. We are down only by nine at the half. We lose by 15. There’s 26 points in the first half and I didn’t even get to the second half.”

Tyrone got the early advantage outscoring the Lady Raiders 16-7.

However, the Red Raiders battled back in the second as they were down 19-12 and Maddie Tice swished a triple, cutting it to 19-15.

A steal on the next Eagle possession by Smith, put the home team to within two at 19-17.

Smith tied the game minutes later as she hit both ends of a one on one with 3:55 left in the half.

But the Eagles has an answer for Bellefonte as they ended the first half going on 13-4 run, making it a 9-point Tyrone advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles outscored the Red Raiders 15-10 in the third.

Leading the way for Tyrone was Shaw with five. Bellefonte got three from Smith.

Defensively in the fourth, Smith was all over the place as she was able to convert three steals and created numerous turnovers for her team.

On a positive note for Bellefonte, despite the loss, the Lady Raiders kept it close against Tyrone as they were only outscored 12-11.
