MC softball tops Central Mountain; remains undefeated

By Kenny Varner

LEWISTOWN – They battled throughout.

The Central Mountain softball team went head-to-head Monday with an undefeated Mifflin County team with the hopes of making it a 3-game winning streak.

Though the Wildcats hit the hard throughout the game, the Mifflin County bats were too much for them to overcome as the Huskies went on to a 10-4 victory.

Picking up the win for the Huskies was Cassidy Wilson,  who went the distance scattering seven hits throughout while giving up four runs.

Central Mountain hurler Madi Knepp took the loss.

Leading the way offensively for the Wildcats was Morgan Wetzel who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Mifflin County got strong offensive performances by Jade Morningstar (2-for-4 2runs), Chloe Fitzgerald (3-for-4 RBI 2 runs) and Alyssa Schnell (3-for-4 2RBI run).

“I thought we hit the ball hard early in the game just right a someone. They hit the ball well,” said Central Mountain coach Fred Caldwell said. “Mifflin County got the ball well. They found the gaps and we hit the ball well but couldn’t find the gaps. That was the difference early on it snowballed on us.”

Mifflin County outhit Central Mountain 14-7.

But the game would provide the Wildcats with some exciting comeback attempts.

After holding the Wildcats scoreless in the first, Mifflin County took the first lead of the game.

Lead off hitter Madison Myers led things off with a single into left field. She was moved to second by a sacrifice bunt by Wilson.

With Myers on second, Olivia Ahern hit a double that scored her teammate on the play.

But the Wildcats settled in and kept Mifflin County to just a run.

Both defenses held in the second, leaving the offenses both scoreless to head into the third.

Wilson blanked Central Mountain again in the third, giving the momentum back to the Huskies’ offense.

The pitcher helped her own cause in the bottom of the inning as she led off with a single.

With one out, Morningstar  moved Wilson to third as she roped a single to right.

Fitzgerald singled in Wilson to up the lead to 2-0.

Alyssa Schnell smoked a bouncing chopper past second base to plate Morningstar, taking a 3-0 advantage into the fourth.

Central Mountain got on the board in the fourth to cut the Mifflin County lead to just two.

Teammate Bailee Renninger walked as Knepp advanced to third on a wild pitch.

She later scored when Renninger was caught stealing second.

Mifflin County added some distance to its lead in the fifth as it plated four runs.

It would be an inning that would have seen Mifflin County pound out five straight hits.

The hits came from Fitzgerald, Schnell, Gianna Hopple and Morgan Weston. All but Weston would score. The other to score was Ahern who was on base via a fielders’ choice, making it a 7-1 advantage.

“I’m happy with what I’m seeing offensively. We also made some good plays offensively,” Mifflin County coach Jack McCurdy said.
