PSU’s Clifford ices game with late score; tops Indiana

UNIVERSITY PARK – Redemption.

After losing in controversial style last week against Minnesota, the Nittany Lion football team looked to get back to its winning ways starting with the 7-2 Indiana team.

Mission accomplished as the Nittany Lions won 34-27.

Opening up the second half, the PSU defense set the tone early, holding the Hoosiers on a fourth down and one.

Two plays later, Brown broke a 35-yard TD run upping the Penn State lead to 27-14 with 10:24 in the third.

With the help of its passing game, the Hoosiers cut into the lead with a 25-yard field goal, making it a 27-17 Penn State lead.

Indiana would not go away, led by the running of Ramsey the Hoosiers cut the lead to 27-24 on a Ramsey 1-yard run.

With time running out, the Lions ran the game clock to its advantage but found itself facing a fourth and goal with 1:55 left.

Penn State called a time out to get everyone on the same page.

The gamble paid off as Clifford scored on a 1-yard run , upping the lead to 34-24.

Penn State got on the scoreboard first as its special teams recovered a fumble on a punt.

With the ball on the 27, it took three plays to score as Quarterback Sean Clifford found Nick Bowers for a 12-yard TD hook up.

Indiana got on the board on its first offensive possession, when quarterback Peyton Ramsey found a wide open Ry Fryfogle on a streak down the middle, culminating in a 38-yard TD pass with 9:31 left in the first quarter.

Thanks to an I’ll-times interference call on Indiana, the Nits were able to roll down the field and post a 47-yard field goal by Jake Pinegar.

Highlighting the drive was a Hamler 41-yard catch from Clifford, putting them ahead 10-7.

But the lead wouldn’t last long as the Hoosiers drove down the field and scored on a 1-yard run by Ramsey, giving them the lead for the first time in the game 14-10.

The game was like a track meet as the Nittany Lions would not let the Hoosiers keep the lead as they slowly took the ball down the field.

Clifford finished off the drive running on a 31-yard touchdown run, putting them ahead 17-14.

At the end of the first, Clifford led all rushers with 39-yards rushing and Hamler has 52 receiving yards.

On the first possession of the second quarter, the Lions forced the Hoosiers to punt.

Late in the second quarter, the Lions moved down the field going to its ground game primarily handing it to Journey Brown.

After getting into Hoosier territory, Clifford hit a wide open Jahon Dodson to put the Lions at a first and goal in the Indiana eight.

However, the drive stalled and the Lions settled for a 27-yard field goal by Pinegar, upping the lead to 20-14 with 3:03 left in the half.

With the win, Penn State improves to 9-1 on the season and 6-1 in the Big 10.
