State College girls advance to stage two

WINGATE – They know how to pull out the close ones.
It seems like in the This year’s post season, the State College girls basketball team knows that when the going gets tough, the tough get going and these girls are certainly tough.
After defeating Mifflin County and Altoona in nail biting fashion, it almost seemed appropriate that it would be the Little Lady Lions would once again be involved in a last minute close contest.
After a tough three and a half quarters of back and forth play, State College would come out on top thanks to a 6-0 run to end the game and pick up the win, 55-45 over Dallastown Friday night at the Bald Eagle Area gym.
Offensively, State College was led by the aggressive, take no prisoners, play by Maya Bokunewicz who scored a game high 21-points.
Going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Little Lions found themselves ahead by a slim 34-33 advantage.
For the first time since the second quarter, State College found itself trailing by one, on a Wildcats basket to start the fourth quarter scoring.
But the deficit would only last for a few seconds as State went on a 3-0 run on a bucket by Bokunewicz and a free throw by Elizabeth Czekaj, making it 37-35 with 6:53 left.
Dallastown started to heat up and went on a 5-0 run, giving it the biggest lead of the game, 40-37.
However, with one flick of the wrist by Bokunewicz from beyond the 3-point line, the game was tied.
State College started its own scoring run as the Little Lions went on a 6-0 run after tying the game.
State College got buckets from Kelsie Love, Bokunewicz and two free throws by Isabelle Leazier, upping the State College lead to 46-40.
But they weren’t done yet.
After a Wildcat basket, Jessica Lingenfelter put the icing on the cake after her triple hit nothing but net, upping it to a 49-44.
Defense took over from there, allowing just one point in the last minute of play, taking the 55-45 win.
With that, the Lady Lions stay alive a head to the second round of PIAA state playoff play.
